Jadon Sancho told to reject Liverpool and Man Utd transfers in favour of Dortmund stay

Former Liverpool player Steve McManaman believes Jadon Sancho would be better off turning down a move to the Premier League in favour of staying at Dortmund.

The England international has scored 17 goals and created 16 assists in the Bundesliga so far this season and is being linked with a big-money move to one of Europe’s elite clubs.

The likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been linked with the player, but speaking to BT Sport McManaman said for the sake of the 20-year-old’s career he should continue at Dortmund for the foreseeable future – and also doesn’t think the move would make much sense from a Liverpool perpsective.

« Jurgen Klopp will bring players in, particularly when those out of contract leave, » McManaman said. « It’s just a matter of timing.

« But with the team they’ve got at the moment – why would you spend nearly £100m on a 20-year-old?

« I don’t mean it disparagingly. Sancho might suit Liverpool and he’d definitely suit Manchester United. I’ve watched him lots of times and he’s having a wonderful season.

« Ideally I think he should stay at Dortmund where he’s already playing Champions League football and flourishing. »

Dortmund’s head of football Sebastien Kehl recently played down the speculation linking Sancho with an exit from the club, saying: « At the moment we continue to assume that he will play and stay at Borussia Dortmund next season.

« Regarding the rumours, I can say that there is nothing to it. »

Nevertheless, it would be no surprise to see one of the Premier League’s big teams make a bid this summer, with Sancho thought to be valued at over £100m by his club.

He will next be in action on Wednesday when Dortmund host Mainz in the Bundesliga trying to finish the season strongly, with the side currently seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich and four points above third place Leipzig with just three games to play.
