A father is charged with murdering his two young children after they were found dead on the floorboard of his truck in the sweltering heat, police say.

Dustin Dennis, 31, is facing two second-degree murder charges in connection with the deaths of his four-year-old daughter Teagan and three-year-old son Ryan in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Police reportedly found the children dead inside the truck Saturday afternoon. Dennis told investigators that he went to a convenience store with his kids and returned home to take a nap, according to KJRH.

He said he then fell asleep for four to five hours and woke up to find his children still in the truck.

The temperature outside on Saturday in Tulsa was 95 degrees (F).

‘After about an hour, I think on a 90-degree day, it can get up to 119 degrees inside,’ Matthew Arroyo, field operations supervisor for the Emergency Medical Services Authority told KARK.

The deaths of the children left their family heartbroken and horrified at the way they died.

All we wish is for more time,’ said Chanteil Keys, the children’s aunt.

‘I can’t imagine what it was like in that vehicle. It would have been literally like being in an oven. Hopefully, they were asleep and went peacefully, but that, that is unknown.’

Surveillance video taken by a neighbor reportedly shows Dennis leaving the truck and locking the doors without removing the children.

‘It is a 100-percent preventable thing. That never has to happen. Always check your back seat,’ Keys said.

Dennis was being held in the Tulsa County jail on a $1 million bond, according to court records, although his bond has since been decreased to $750,000.
